PHNOM PENH: “Two-way trade volume between Cambodia and Japan reached over $513 million in 2011 and it will be expected to increase further for 2012, a senior official from JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) here said on Friday. Kiyotaka Doho said: Japan’s exporting to Cambodia was worth about $205,430,000 and it was increased about 129.8? for year-on-year. And high-ranking items were exported from Japan including machinery and vehicles, and meat. At the same time, Japan also imported from Cambodia with value of $308,830,000, with 147.7 per cent increase for year-on-year. The high-ranking items were imported from Cambodia such as footwear and woven apparel and knit apparel.
Five months of 2012:
For five months of this year, Japan’s exporting to Cambodia cost about 5, 627, 145 million yen, an increase of 82. 5 per cent if compared with same period of last year. On the other hand, Japan imported from Cambodia for five month of this year valued about 10, 751, 337 million yen, an increase of 118.6 per cent if compared with the same period of last year.
Doho adds: “In 2012, we hope that bilateral trade between Cambodia and Japan will be accelerated because Japan also plans to import more from Cambodia and it has trend of Japanese companies to increase the Japanese investment into Cambodia.
“We also see the product of machinery and equipment which will be exported from Japan to Cambodia.” If compared to 2009 and 2011, the export value of machinery is increasing with amount of 30.79 Million USD. Additionally, Japan also imported from Cambodia with diversification of garment exporting- country.” Doho says.
“Garment industry is one of main economic growth, and “That industry is successful and the Cambodian government also inspired the product.” Especially between 2009 and 2011, Japan bought from Cambodia like woven apparel which is increasing in figure of 85.50 Million USD. For Japanese investment, Doho notes: the amount of investment into Special Economic Zone (Inclusive of additional investment) costs 88,670,000 dollars, and it is the first of the whole country. A Japanese company also plans to open an assembly plant of hardware devices for computer at Poi Pet and that project values about $12 million, a source said. Currently, Members of Japanese Business Association of Cambodia are 108 companies. Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Japan valued about US$367 million in 2010. Moreover, Cambodia and Japan already signed the investment protection agreement. Cambodia is trying to engage the Japanese investment to boost the economic growth.
